How to implement disk quotas management in windows 7 and Windows 8.1?

When a computer is used by multiple users, you might want to limit the amount of storage space used by every user. This ensures that the storage space on a certain drive or partition is never filled up by a single user only. This article will help you to understand what are disk quotas? How to set them in Windows 7 and Windows 8.1?

What are Disk Quotas?

Disk space quotas control the storage space available on NTFS driver or partition. By setting quotas, an administrator can set the amount of information a user can store on the drive or partition. This means that, whenever user exceeds its disk quota, he/she will not able to store any new data on it.

How disk quotas work in Windows 7 and Windows 8.1?

1. To set disk quotas and quota limit, Use Windows account that has administrative privileges. Normal or standard user cannot set quotas.
2. Hard drive must use the NTFS file system. (FAT32 formatted driver cannot set disk quotas)
3. Disk quotas can be set for disks or partitions not on folders.
4. For multiple driver or partition on Windows computer, quotas limits will be set individually for each one.

How to implement disk quotas limits for every user account?

Step 1: Open File Explorer. Select the disk to enforce quota limits; then right click or tap and hold on it and click or tap Properties.

Step 5: Check the option that says “Deny disk space to user exceeding quota limit”. Then, select “Limit disk space to” and input the value for the quota limit.

Note: You can also log an event whenever a user is close to its limit. For that you can set a value for the “Set warning level” field.

Conclusion:
If the computer is used by more than one user then enabling quota management and enforcing quota limit can be pretty useful. Do you think quotas are useful for home computer or they are only useful in office environments?
