How to share a printer on a network with Windows and MAC OS X

Windows and MAC can both get together and share files and printers on a network. You can do this with a single wired printer connected to all the computers on your network. The modern wireless printers share themselves through a network by getting connected to it. For sharing a printer on a network with Windows and MAC you need to follow these steps.

Share printer on Windows 


For sharing a printer on Windows you need to visit the network and sharing center in Windows Control Panel. Then click on the Change advanced sharing settings and then on file and print sharing.

. Move on to the printer list in the Control Panel and right click on the printer that needs to be shared; and select printer properties.

. After finishing this go to the sharing tab and enable sharing of the printer and give it a name.

· First of all click on the Network option Windows.

· Then click on the Windows PC to share the printer. You can now see the shared printer on the PC’s monitor. To add and configure the printer make a double click on it.

Sharing printer on MAC OS X


MAC OS X cannot share printer using the Windows standard sharing system. Therefore you will need  to share the  printer with the help of Apple’s Bonjour protocol but Windows will require to add additional feature to access such a printer.

· Go to the Apple menu and click on the System Preferences and then on Printers and Scanners.

· Choose the printer that needs to be shared and click on ‘Share this printer’ on the network box.

· Click on the ‘Sharing Preferences’ and make sure the printer sharing service is enabled.

Access a Shared Printer on Mac OS X


· Choose the + button from the ‘Printers and Scanners’ panel and click on the ‘Add Printer ‘or Scanner’.

· You may also add a printer using the Print dialog of an application. All you have to do is click on the printer’s box and select add Printer to access the dialog.

·  Now click on the Windows icon and select workgroup and finally select the printer you want t share and add it to your system.
